Types of Group Dental Options

DHMOs: Dental Health Maintenance Organizations are prepaid health plans. As an DHMO member, you pay a monthly premium. In exchange, the HMO provides comprehensive care for you and your family, including dentist visits, preventive care, basic care and major care. In most DHMOs, a set fee is paid by the member for a certain service rendered.

PPOs: Preferred Provider Organization dental plans offer in and out of network dentists. The majority of Dental PPOs offer free preventive care and then offer percentages for basic and major care. For example: Preventive Care includes office visits, cleanings, fluoride treatments and x-rays. The plan typically pays 100% with no deductible. Basic care includes fillings, cavities and extractions and typically the member pays 20% of negotiated price and the carrier pays 80%. Major Care is usually split 50/50 between the member and dental carrier. PPO plans usually have a maximum benefit per year. This amount is typically between $1000 and $2000.
